A brief treatise on: Fighting position

$
0
0
During and following the conclusion of the fight at UFC 157 between Lyoto Machida and Dan Henderson, a vocal contingent sprung up that feels that Machida should have been more engaging and initiated striking exchanges instead of actively avoiding them. The problem with this line of thought is twofold. One, it ignores Lyoto Machida's entire fighting history of staying on the outside and waiting to counter foolhardy opponents that rush in, not standing flat-footed in the pocket swinging wildly. Secondly, it ignores the sickening power Dan Henderson possesses.

I've seen people argue that Dan was trying to fight, but Lyoto was running away. This is also incorrect. Again, Lyoto's style is predicated on avoiding exchanges and instead countering impatient fighters (His knockout against Ryan Bader is a prime example). Both men were implementing their typical methods, Lyoto's circling and keeping distance and Dan's stalking, right hand cocked back, ready to unleash once he got within range, but Lyoto just performed his style better than Dan in the judges' eyes. Dan could have used angles to cut off Lyoto's avenues of movement, since before the fight it was expected that Henderson couldn't match Machida's speed. Additionally, had Machida traded with Henderson and been knocked out, there would be an even larger group clamoring that Lyoto was dumb, because of course that's what happens when people stand and bang with Dan.

Also, let it be known that I am saying all of this as a fan of Henderson, and I wanted him to win, hopefully with a big knockout. Unfortunately, he didn't do that, but it doesn't mean he fought a more "real" fight than Machida. To venture away from that specific contest, let me use a fight from UFC 157's preliminaries as another example. In the Brendan Schaub versus Lavar Johnson fight, everyone knew that Johnson had tremendous punching power, but limited grappling skills, so his preferred area would of course be standing. Schaub decided to implement a wrestling gameplan, and it worked, to the tune of a decision victory. Both fighters had different preferences on what kind of fight would provide the best avenue for victory, and only Schaub was able to see his to fruition. It doesn't mean that Johnson is a "real" fighter because he wanted to stand and bang and Schaub isn't because he used grappling.

A fighter should employ any and every technique within the rules that gives the best possible chance for victory since combat sports aren't like regular sports. Once knockouts enter the equation, the onus is for a fighter to only win, entertainment shouldn't factor into fighting style at all.

Of course, you don't have to take my word for it, you can also see what Pat "HD" Barry thinks on the situation.

Rad Fights of Yesteryear - Shamrock vs Severn II

Welcome to Leg Kick TKO, a MMA blog that's simply the most lamentable dustman in existence.

UFC 9: Superfight championship - Ken Shamrock vs Dan Severn

This time on Rad Fights of Yesteryear, it is perhaps the Raddest Fight to have ever existed. Ken Shamrock and Dan Severn are two legendary competitors, and, at the time of the fight, were two highly rated fighters. Severn had won the UFC 5 and Ultimate Ultimate 95 tournaments, while Shamrock was the inaugural King of Pancrase champion and the defending UFC Superfight champion (Having defeated Dan Severn to win the belt).

Due to some last-minute rule changes that allowed the event to take place in Detroit, closed fist punches to the head and headbutts were no longer allowed (This shouldn't have been too much of a problem for Shamrock, since Pancrase also barred closed fist punches). Also, thanks to a Tito Ortiz-esque litany of training injuries, Shamrock was less than 100% going into the bout.

However, because both men were incredibly skilled mixed martial artists, what went down was one of those rare fights that is both an all-out war and an epic, highly-contested, cerebral chess match.

On this, the first day of April, please enjoy "The Detroit Dance".

Today on Fantastic Finishes, we celebrate AMERICA!

Dan "Hendo" Henderson vs Michael Bisping - UFC 100 (July 11, 2009)

Who are these guys?

Dan Henderson is a wrestler that posses a megaton warhead in his right fist known as the H-Bomb. Michael Bisping is a kickboxer that has been called out by ever fighter that's ever made the UFC roster. They spent several weeks coaching against each other on The Ultimate Fighter were Dan was charming and funny, and Bisping was contentious, smarmy, and a big dumb jerk.

What's so special about this fight?

This fight is pretty much the best knockout in the history of knockouts. To the people that watched the entire season of TUF and saw Bisping constantly complaining, and making fun of people, but unable to handle even the slightest bit of joking at his expense, it was sweet revenge.  It spawned hilarious photoshops, the best of which is this one:

Uncle Sam says BLAMMO!

What did we learn?

  • Don't circle to the left against Henderson (Bisping's corner SCREAMS this at him between rounds)
  • AMERICA RULES, BRITAIN DROOLS

Fantastic Finishes - Overeem vs Fujita

$

Welcome to Leg Kick TKO, a MMA blog that's more ridiculous than the average Jonathan Goulet haircut.

Today on Fantastic Finishes, we take a look back at the time Alistair Overeem's foray into fighting large-headed monsters didn't end with him getting murdered via hubris (Of course, it helps that Fujita is about five hojillion times worse at the mixing of martial arts than Antonio Silva).

Alistair Overeem vs. Kazuyuki Fujita - Dynamite!! 2009 (December 31, 2009)

Who Are These Dorks?

Alistair Overeem is a Dutch kickboxer that packed on an entire Demetrious Johnson worth of muscle in about two years, allegeldy through a steady diet of horse meats. His knees are so powerful, they have been known to shakedown the Tunguska event for its lunch money.

Kazuyuki Fujita is a Japanese (pro) wrestler born with Homer Simpson Syndrome, otherwise known as a slightly thicker than average skull. He's used this X-gene to absorb his opponents' punishment and gently nudge their exhausted bodies over for glorious knockouts (technically) (Or, in the case of Ken Shamrock, force a heart attack).

Why Is This Fight Special?

In all his history as a punching bag, Fujita had never gone entirely unconscious. He had several TKO stoppages on his record, but they were either from cuts, his corner calling off the fight two seconds in thanks to injuries, or, in the case of his bout against Wanderlei Silva, Fujita was on his way back to his feet (For I believe the sixtieth time) when the ref waved off the contest.

Against Overeem, though, Fujita went out entirely. In fact, he went super out, so much that Overeem ran into Fujita being taken to the hospital on a stretcher in the back of the arena. Fujita went so unconscious, I don't believe he retired from MMA so much as he just hasn't woken up yet.

What Did We Learn?

  • Alistair Overeem's knees will murder your brain so hard your parents will forget you ever existed
  • A person needs more than a thick candy shell around their head to be a successful mixed martial artist
  • Knee Death claims another victim, having previously stopped a man's heart, and later, drained a man of all his head-blood.

  • Jones's Style - Wrestling, striking (poles)
  • Alternate Jones Nicknames - Jon "Snitchster Christian" Jones, Jon "Snowball King" Jones
  • Sonnen's Style - Wrestling, fraud
  • Prediction - Jones by TKO
  • Fantasty-Land Prediction - Chael P. Sonnen by submission (Omoplata)
  • Thoughts - I like Sonnen, both as a bloviating so-and-so, and also as a head down, driving forward fighter, but I think Jones is just too good to get wrestled upon for twenty-five minutes, which I see as Chael's only avenue for victory. Sorry, Chael, but you're pretty great at analysis, and hopefully soon, commentary.

Technique Appreciation Station - German suplex

Welcome to Leg Kick TKO, a MMA blog that's never met an opponent it didn't try to duck.

Well lookie here, a new article category that I'm sure will be used once or twice and then forgotten or ignored! This time, instead of talking about dudes what do cool moves, I'm just going to focus on cool moves done by a bunch of different guys, because screw analysis, let's just look at GIFs!

There are a lot of different grappling arts at play in mixed martial arts, and since every fight starts standing (Wheelchair karate bouts notwithstanding), they all include various methods of getting an opponent to the ground. The cooler arts include throws, because the ancient masters knew that hucking some dorkus through the air and onto his face looked pretty sweet. Wrestling has some exceptional throws, which makes sense since it was devloped initially by thick-necked farmhands as a means of transporting livestock. The raddest of all wrestling throws is the suplex, and at the top of the suplex list is the German variant (Or belly to back if you want to be a lame pedant about things)

Soup-Flex, You Say? Do Go On!

First of all, this ain't no portmanteau, it's a dang suplex, so get it right, or pay the price. Second of all, fake dumb reader I constantly berate, I think we should watch a brief tutorial on how to properly suplex some jamoke out his (Or her!) shoes.

Now that proper suplexery has been explained to us, it's time to see the German in action for real. Check out a plethora of GIFs and videos after the jump because I don't want to explode anyone's browsers or however that works.

I've already written about one of the most epic suplexes in the history of MMA, so feel free to refresh your memory about the time Kevin Randleman ALMOST popped Fedor Emelianenko's head off at the shoulders.

Dan Severn might have invented the German suplex in MMA at UFC 4 against Anthony Macias.

Flipping the script to a Russian (Technically Dagestani) fighter delivering a killer suplex, Rustam Khabilov made his UFC debut by suplexing Vinc Pichel into a living death, and holy hell, it was awesome.

We can't forget about Rory MacDonald German suplexing Nate Diaz back down to lightweight. Anytime a person gets ragdolled out of an entire division, you know the 'plexing is awesome.

On a Z-league level, some dude named Gregy Styles (Greg E. Styles, maybe?) showed why it's good to outweigh an opponent by twenty pounds (And the lighter guy still has to wear a shame-shirt) by, according to the video description "suplexing the FIRE" out of some doughy Jeet Kune Do practicioner (I was unaware water could get suplexed so thoroughly).

Another angle because it's pretty dang rad.

Back to Japan, there was the time Josh Barnett hit back to back belly to back suplexes on Yuki Kondo (To be fair, Barnett also wrestles professionally, so he knows all about a good German)

Speaking of pro wrestlers, Katsuyori Shibata hit a beautifully arched German on rad dude MINOWAMAN

Those are some of my very favorite German suplexes. Let me know if I missed any particularly rad ones in the comments, or tell me your favorites.

The Incredible Smugness of Frank Mir - A Photo Essay

Welcome to Leg Kick TKO, a MMA blog that's stupider than Nick Diaz Promotions Presents: WAR MMA.

SMUG MUG

Holy cow, look at Francisco Santos Mir III, being the absolute smuggest motherfucker in the entire history of the universe's existence.

SMUUUUG

That is a man that is always impressed with his own performance, and is in constant doubt of your abilities.

RAD TAT, FRANKLIN

This is a man what has a flaming rhinoceros samurai riding a motorcycle tattooed across his back.

OH GOD, IT'S TOO SMUG!

A man that has named his own children, the spawn of his loins, Kage and Ronin Maximus Mir.

GIF via https://twitter.com/ZProphet_MMA

He is a man that has reached the towering heights of submitting Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and plummeted to the depressing lows of getting knocked out by Marcio Cruz and Ian Freeman (The latter of which happened while Mir was attempting to finish a leglock, which is the most hilarious outcome).

GIF via https://twitter.com/ZProphet_MMA

Frank's smugness is so severe that he even makes his smug face during fights he is in the process of losing. I wonder if it's actually a brain disease he has instead of just an inflated sense of self worth (Though, I guess those are pretty similar).

Bellator Summer Series Preview

Welcome to Leg Kick TKO, a MMA blog that takes medical advice from Dan Quinn.

Bellator finally returns with its summer series, and I am so very happy. Four-man tournaments in Bantamweight, Light Heavyweight, and Heavyweight will take place, in addition to some title defenses.

Bantamweight Tournament

A tournament has been announced for the 135 pounders, but no participants have been officially named. Oh, Bellator, you crazy little goofball.

Light Heavyweight Tournament

The tournament with the most name recognition, as it features Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal, "Silverback" Seth Petruzelli (Known to some as the "Kimbo Killer") and apparent MMA legend, Renato "Babalu" Sobral. Also, whatever the hell a Jacob Noe is. I fully expect the winner of this tournament to beat Atilla Vegh.

Heavyweight Tournament

The heavyweight tournament is thin on big name talent, and it's uncertain on how good the fighers are. Vinicius Queiroz had his UFC run stopped before it started, getting submitted by Rob "It's Already Been" Broughton, while Richard Hale is partly known for getting the second inverted triangle in Bellator history and also for getting knocked out by the comparably tinier Christian M'Pumbu in the Season Four Light Heavyweight tournament finals/championship fight. Ron Sparks, like Queiroz, has a victory over Mark Holota, but he hasn't fought in two years and is 38. Vitaly Minakov is Russian, which is a boon in Bellator, but he's not Dagestani, which isn't as good. He's also undefeated, an accomplished sambist/judoka, and has gotten called "Fedor's Prototype", so he'll probably get upset in the first round in hilarious fashion.

Bellator 96

The entire first round of both the Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight tournaments begin, with Lawal vs Petruzelli, Noe vs Sobral, Queiroz vs Hale, and Sparks vs Minakov. Also, War Machine makes his Bellator debut (Unless he gets arrested again between now and Wednesday) against the totally real person called Blas Avena.

Bellator 97

This card is probably going to be super rad since it features a Welterweight title defense from "Funky" Ben Askren, taking on Andrey Koreshkov. Also slated is Michael Chandler making a Lightweight defense against David "Caveman" Rickels, and a Featherweight fight betwixt Patricio "Pitbull" Freire and Rob Emerson. I fully expect both champions to successfully retain, though I would love to see Rickels win the belt for his cromagnon people. Also, Douglas Lima and Ben Saunders will finally face each other in the Welterweight finals from Season Seven.

Technique Appreciation Station - Chin-in-eye submission

$
0
0
Welcome to Leg Kick TKO, a MMA blog that doesn't actually talk about leg kick TKOs (Whoops!).

This time on TAS we look back to the ye olden timey days of mixed martial arts where rules were scarce. In the early days of MMA (And also Vale Tudo), wrestlers basicaly had three paths to victory:

  1. Headbutts - get atop a man and smash his face into a jelly with your own noggin
  2. Knees to the head - get atop a man, move to north/south position, and smash his brain to paste with knees
  3. Chin in eye submission - get atop a man and jam your jawbone into his eyesocket until the dude gives the hell up

Before people wised up and outlawed this crazy-ass 'technique', there were a few notable instances of its effectiveness.

"The Smashing Machine" Mark Kerr submitted Dan Bobish to win the finals of the UFC 14 Heavyweight tournament.

Chin in eye wizard Chirs Haseman has two victories by that 'hold', one of which is over "The King of Rock and Rumble" Elvis Sinosic.

I fully appreciate the effectiveness of the submission, but something that directly targets the eyes is a little too much in my book. I'm glad it's illegal, and now there is nothing in all of MMA that can threaten a fighter's vision (Except everything else, like getting punched in the eye, or glove seams cutting the eyelids, or "accidental" eye pokes, or, if you're Mike Winklejohn, one of your students cutting your eyeball with his toenail)
